Opera Opens Green Data Center in Iceland

Browser developer Opera Software today reportedly is preparing to use Thor's data center in Iceland. It is planned that there are some important parts of the data traffic will be handled by Opera this new data center.

Thor Data Center was founded by the entrepreneurs of Iceland and only use energy from renewable sources. Source of data center power is taken from a geothermal power. In addition, because it is located in cold regions, the energy consumption for cooling system that is used will be smaller than usual consumption of data centers.

This data center will be able to accommodate 78 petabytes of data, about one billion pages on Facebook. Data will be transmitted via submarine cables Opera.

Preparation of data centers is done in brief, just 18 months, thanks to new technology. With this new technology, data centers can be separated in smaller containers so that data is more flexible for further development. This form of data container ocean shipping containers filled with computer equipment, data and power cables, as well as air and liquid cooling systems.

Opera and Thor did not mention the value of the agreement, said only about a few billion UTI (kronor Iceland), with one billion kronor Iceland's equivalent to 7.8 million dollars.
